The molybdenum-containing oxide material has a layer comprising a molybdenum-free metal oxide formed on a surface of particles comprising a molybdenum-containing cerium material. An amount of the metal of the molybdenum-free metal oxide is 1-30% of a total amount of the oxide. When the molybdenum-containing oxide material is produced, a molybdenum-containing cerium material is formed and a molybdenum-free metal oxide is carried on a surface thereof, or a molybdenum-containing cerium material is formed and molybdenum existing in an outermost surface thereof is scattered.
