PURPOSE: To obtain signals for controlling the spaces between casting mold blocks and for urgent/counter measure by providing a light emitting body and photodetector in the opposite positions where the mold block groups of a casting region are held in place therebetween from the transverse direction of the blocks.
CONSTITUTION: The light emitting body 4 and photodetector 5 which are paired are installed in the paired positions where said light emitting body and photodetector face each other by holding the block groups 2 in the casting region in place therebetween from the transverse direction of the mold blocks 1 in a moving type continuous casting machine forming the casting space between two sets of the mold block groups 2. The photodetector 5 detects the light emitted by the body 4 through the space generated in the contact parts of the blocks 2 when the block groups 2 move so as to shut off the light transmission path between the body 4 and the photodetector 5 upon starting of the operation. A signal is emitted if there is abnormality. The signal for controlling the spaces between the mold blocks and for urgent/counter measure are thus obtd. with a good timing.
