PURPOSE: To enhance strength and fracture toughness over a wide temp. range by using alumina-based inorg. fibers as a reinforcing material and a specified oxide-based nanocomposite material as a matrix.
CONSTITUTION: Particles of (multiple) nitride of Si, B, Al, Mg, Ti, Mo, etc., or (multiple) carbide of Si, Ti, Zx, Al, etc., having 1-1,000μm particle diameter are dispersed in particles of (multiple) oxide of Al, Mg, Si, Y, In, U, Ca, Sc, Ta, Nb, Nd, La, Lu, Rh, Be, Ti, Sn, Sr, Ba, Zn, Zr, Fe, etc., having 0.05-1,000μm particle diameter by 1-50 vol.% and they are hot-pressed to obtain an oxide- based nanocomposite material as a matrix. This matrix is mixed with 1-70vol.% alumina-based inorg. fibers as a reinforcing material and the mixture is compacted and sintered at 400-2,100°C.
