To obtain a new dietary fiber composition capable of preventing unpleasant symptoms caused by water-soluble dietary fibers such as diarrhea and further increasing effects of the ingested water-soluble dietary fibers.
This new dietary fiber composition comprises a substance, separated from barley malts or rice germinated seeds and containing 10-70wt.% protein and 20-70wt.% insoluble dietary fibers and water-soluble dietary fibers (e.g. a polydextrose). The mixing weight ratio of the substance containing the protein and insoluble dietary fibers to the water-soluble dietary fibers is (5:1) to (1:3). The composition is capable of raising fecal discharging ability possessed by the water-soluble dietary fibers and simultaneously suppressing diarrhea which is an adverse effect of the water-soluble dietary fibers. A food and drink containing the composition is effectively used as a functional food having intestinal mucosal enhancing actions or defecation promoting actions. The composition is useful as an intestinal mucosal enhancer, a defecation promoter and an agent for controlling the intestinal functions.
