PURPOSE: To oxidize aromatic compds. having oxidizable alkyl groups by proceeding oxidation reaction in water or admixture of water and an org. solvent in the presence of a specified solid catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective oxidation is carried out by reacting aromatic compds. of the formula (where Y is oxidizable alkyl; (n) is 1-5; T is a 1-24C hydrocarbon group, and may be aliphatic groups, two of R linked to two of O supported on C adjacent to aromatic nucleous form satd., unsatd. or aromatic ring having 5-8 atoms together with O) with an oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide, oxygen, etc., in the presence of a solid catalyst having active phases and containing a metal element such as tin, germanium, tellurium or copper combined with palladium, in water or admixture of water and an org. solvent, preferably under 1-100 bar at 50-120°C.
