PURPOSE: To prepare a complex stably containing unpaired electrons in sufficiently high density to enable the use as a magnetic material, and having the characteristic properties of organic polymers, by combining a polymer having a specific molecular structure with a sulfur oxide.
CONSTITUTION: The objective paramagnetic complex is prepared by combining (A) a polymer containing p-phenylene bonds and/or p-phenylene bonds and chalcogen bonds as the major part of the constituent main chain, with (B) 0.1W 1.0mol of sulfur oxide per 1mol of the recurring unit of the p-phenylene structure of the polymer. The combination of both components is carried out by diffusing gaseous or liquid sulfur oxide into the molded article of the polymer. The complex loses its property when exposed to the atmosphere, and it is preferable to coat its surface with a hydrophobic thin film impermeable to the sulfur oxide. A magnetic element can be manufactured e.g. by evaporating the polymer to a substrate, or dissolving the polymer in an organic solvent, and casting on the substrate.
