To provide a novel photoelectric conversion element used as an organic thin-film solar cell etc.
The photoelectric conversion element has a first electrode and a second electrode, and has an active layer between the first electrode and the second electrode, and the active layer contains an organic compound having a structural unit represented by formula (1). In the formula, R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkyloxy, alkylthio, aryl, aryloxy, arylthio, aryl alkyl, aryl alkyloxy, aryl alkylthio, aryl alkenyl, aryl alkynyl, amino, substituted amino, silyl, substituted silyl, silyloxy, substituted silyloxy, monovalent heterocyclic, halogen, acyl, acyloxy, amide, carboxyl, nitro, or cyano. A D ring and an E ring represent aromatic rings which are the same or different from each other and may have substituents.
