PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power control apparatus and method for a reverse link common channel in a code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system.
SOLUTION: A base station of the CDMA communication system has a common power control channel transmitter composed of a selector for receiving, multiplexing and outputting power control instructions to be transmitted to a large number of subscribers and a spread modulator for loading a spread sequence to the output of the selector, spreading the output over bands and transmitting the output. Power control to the reverse link common channel is performed by carrying out a first step of receiving a signal from a terminal to the base station via the reverse link common channel and a second step of transmitting the power control instruction for controlling the transmission power of the reverse link common channel to the terminal in response to the strength of the received signal.
