Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound, benzyl alcohol, efficiently and economically advantageously by hydrolyzing benzyl acetate by using a specific copolymer as a catalyst.
SOLUTION: This compound, benzyl alcohol, is obtained by hydrolyzing (B) benzyl acetate in the presence of (A) a sulfonated styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer whose divinylbenzene unit content is <8wt.%, preferably 1-7wt.%. The hydrolysis is preferably conducted by a continuous fixed-bed reaction system that feeds the component B and water continuously into a reactor packed with the component A for hydrolyzing the component B. In this hydrolysis the molar ratio of the water/component 5 is normally 0.5-30, preferably 1-15.
