Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for profitably producing benzyl alcohol by hydrolyzing benzyl acetate in the presence of a cation exchange catalyst having sulfonate groups in a limited raw material composition region.
SOLUTION: This method for producing benzyl alcohol comprises hydrolyzing benzyl acetate in the presence of a cation exchange resin having sulfonate groups. Therein, the reaction is carried out in a raw material composition expressed by inequalities: 1/9≤y/x≤3/2 and 0≤z≤30, when the amounts of the benzyl acetate, the water and the acetic acid are x wt.%, y wt.% and z wt.%, respectively, (x +y+z=100wt.%).
