Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound that is useful as a starting substance for perfumes and medicines through an industrially advantageous process at a large reaction rate in high yield by catalytic hydrogenation of an unsaturated aldehyde.
SOLUTION: An unsaturated aldehyde represented by formula I (X and Y are each H, a C-C bond; n is 0-2) is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of a Raney nickel modified with Fe and Cr and a tertiary amine usually at normal pressure to 50kg/cm2G to produce the objective unsaturated alcohol represented by formula II. The Raney nickel used contains 2-8wt.% of Fe and Cr and the amount of the catalyst used in the reaction is 0.01-10wt.% based on the reaction mixture, while the amount of the tertiary amine is 0.1-50wt.% based on the reaction mixture. From the view point of reaction operation, the amount of the modified Raney nickel is 0.05-5wt.%, the tertiary amine is 0.1-20wt.% and the partial pressure of hydrogen is preferably normal to 20kg/cm2G.
