Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the waveguide which is low in loss and hardly attains multimodes in branch parts by forming the Y-branch waveguide by using a mask pattern for controlling a Y-branch ion exchange of a specific shape. CONSTITUTION:The input path of the control mask pattern on an ion exchange prohibiting film 2 on a glass substrate 1 consists of straight paths 3A, 3B of a width W0 and the width of the output paths 4, 5 after a transient region Z provided after the branch point O is made into W0 as well. The transient region Z consists of a first half sub-zone and a second half sub-zone. The branch angle theta1 of the two branch paths 61, 71 of the first half is set smaller than the branch angle theta0 of output paths 4, 5 and the opening width W1 is also set smaller than the opening width W0 of the output paths 4, 5. The sub-zone of the second half is expanded in the opening width W2 of both paths 62, 72 gradually from W1 to W0. The waveguide which is low in loss and hardly attains the multimodes is, therefore, obtd.
