To efficiently treat a chlorine-containing waste plastic by heating a specific organic solvent below its boiling point, immersing the chlorine- containing waste plastic in the heated organic solvent to dechlorinate the plastic, and subsequently recovering the chlorine from the produced chlorine-containing exhaust gas.
This method for treating a chlorine-containing waste plastic comprises heating an organic solvent (for example, a coal tar-based heavy oil) having a boiling point of ≥300°C and an aromatic index of ≥0.2 at a temperature of 200-400°C below its boiling point, immersing a chlorine-containing waste plastic (for example, vinyl chloride resin in waste materials such as waste vehicles or waste household electric appliances) preferably at 150-500°C for about 0.5-30 min to dechlorinate the plastic, and subsequently recovering the chlorine from the produced chlorine-containing exhaust gas. The dechlorinated waste plastic may be utilized as a reducing material for blast furnaces as such or after the concentration of the dechlorinated waste plastic is adjusted.
