To execute the treatment of salts containing heavy metals without requiring the manipulation to increase the amount of the salts with a device which can be simplified by impressing DC voltage between electrodes disposed in the molten salt containing the heavy metals, maintaining the temperature of the molten salt at a temperature range above the melting point of the heavy metals to be deposited and separating the deposited heavy metals and the salts in a molten state.
The molten salt charged from a molten salt supply port 16 is heated by a heating means 15 and is held at the prescribed temperature within 500 to 1100°C. The DC voltage corresponding to the electrolytic potential at which the heavy metals to be removed deposit is impressed between the anode 12a and the cathode 12b. The heavy metal ions are moved toward the cathode 12b by this impression and are deposited in the form of the metals on its surface. The deposited heavy metal are in the molten state and, therefore, settle and accumulate on the bottom of an electrolytic cell 10. After the heavy metal concentration in the molten salt is lowered down to a prescribed value or below, the molten salt is withdrawn and recovered from a molten salt discharge port 18 and the deposited heavy metals 31 from a metal discharge port 19.
