Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to provide a friction modifier capable of achieving both a friction reduction effect and storage stability, and a lubricant composition that includes the friction modifier and has a high friction reduction effect and high stability at high temperatures. The present invention relates to a friction modifier comprising a copolymer (A) that includes a monomer (a) represented by general formula (1) and a monomer (b) represented by general formula (2) as essential constituent monomers. The monomer (a) of the monomers constituting the copolymer (A) has an average value of p per mole of the monomer (a) of 1-4. The weight average molecular mass of the copolymer (A) is 5000-38,000, and the copolymer (A) contains 10-60 wt% of the monomer (a) on the basis of the total weight of monomers constituting the copolymer (A) as constituent monomers. In general formula (1), A1 is a polymerizable group; -X1-, -X2-, and -X3- are each a group independently represented by -O- or -NH-, R1 is an alkylene group having 1-4 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkylene group having 2-20 carbon atoms, R3 is a hydrogen atom, p is an integer between 1 and 100, and when p is two or greater, R2 and X3, of which there are a plurality, may each be the same or may be different. In general formula (2), R4 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, -X4- is a group represented by -O- or -NH-, and R5 is a straight-chain or branched alkyl group having 5-44 carbon atoms.
