Abstract:
Provided is a thermally-assisted magnetic recording head, which achieves highly efficient optical coupling, while guiding a laser beam from a semiconductor laser, i.e., a light source, to a leading end of a head, eliminating influence of heat generated by the semiconductor laser, and having excellent floating characteristics.  The thermally-assisted magnetic recording head is composed of a substrate (2) having a first optical waveguide (1) on a surface, a semiconductor laser (100), and a slider (4) having a second optical waveguide (3) formed on an end surface.  The semiconductor laser (100) is fixed on the substrate (2) so that light outputted from the semiconductor laser (100) is propagated to the first optical waveguide (1), and a slider (4) is fixed on the substrate (2) so that light outputted from the first optical waveguide (1) is propagated to the second optical waveguide (3).  Thus, high optical coupling efficiency is achieved, while ensuring heat dissipating characteristics and floating characteristics.
