Abstract:

A utility knife (10) has a blade carrier (26) defining a blade support surface movably mounted in a housing (20) between retracted and extended positions. A catch (28) is mounted on the blade carrier (26) and is movable between a first position engagable with a blade (14) seated on the blade carrier (26) and substantially preventing the blade (14) from moving relative to the blade carrier (26), and a second position spaced away from the blade (14) located on the blade carrier (26) and permitting removal of the blade (14) from the blade carrier (26). An actuator (24) is mounted on the blade carrier (26) and is operable to move the blade carrier (26) between the retracted and extended positions to, in turn, move a blade (14) located on the blade carrier (26) between retracted and extended positions, and move the catch (28) between the firs and second positions to release a blade (14) from the blade carrier (26).
