PURPOSE: To obtain a film free from coating defects, e.g., sagging, solvent popping, mottling, metallic unevenness, by coating a substrate with a blend of aqueous coating compound sprayed from one spray gun and a thickening agent sprayed simultaneously from the other one.
CONSTITUTION: The spray guns 5 for coating and the spray guns 6 for a thicking solvent are placed 10W100 mm apart, and an aqueous coating compound is sprayed by the spray guns 5 for coating with a spray air flow of 40W1000 l/minute. Not more than one-third based on the spray amount of the aqueous coating compound of a thickening solvent is sprayed simultaneously by the spray guns 6 for a thickening solvent with a spray air flow of 20W200 l/minute. The spray pattern of the solvent 8 is contained in that of the coating compound 7, and the solvent and the coating compound are blended sufficiently so that the mixture is applied to a substrate, e.g., a car body, etc.
