PURPOSE: To make it possible to examine a magnetic card for genuineness automatically, easily and accurately, by providing a non-magnetic layer on a part or the entire surface of a magnetic recording layer of a magnetic card, and reading variations in a magnetic output based on the presence or absence of the magnetic layer or differences in the thickness of the layer by a magnetic head.
CONSTITUTION: Magnetic recording layers 11, 12 are provided on a base layer 10 of a plastic, a paper or the like, and an ink constituted of arbitrary non- magnetic materials is applied to the magnetic recording layer 11 by printing to provide a non-magnetic layer 13. The examine a magnetic card for genuineness with the above construction, for example, two magnetic heads 2 are used. One of the magnetic heads is used for reading data recorded in the magnetic recording layer 12, whereas the other head is used to detect the presence or absence or the thickness of the non-magnetic layer, and a detection output is collated with a magnetic output pattern preliminarily stored in a device, thereby examining the magnetic card for genuineness. Thus, the magnetic card can be examined for genuineness automatically and accurately.
