Abstract:

To provide a method for production of trimethylol propane with low APHA (American Public Health Organization) color number, suitable for production of a resin for paint, powder paint, a foam or a polyester.

The method comprises a step a) forming a reaction mixture containing trimethylol propane by reacting n-butylaldhyde and/or 2,2-dimethylol butylaldehyde in the presence of formaldehyde and an inorganic base, a step b) at least partially removing water and an inorganic salt from the reaction mixture containing the trimethylol propane obtained in the step a) to obtain the crude trimethylol propane, and a step c) separating the crude trimethylol propane obtained in the step b) by distillation into a low-boiling fraction, a medium-boiling fraction containing at least one substance mainly comprising the trimethylol propane and a high-boiling fraction.
