Title:
PHASE MODULATION METHOD AND PHASE MODULATOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH02210320
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide larger phase modulation to signal energy of a given quantity by transmitting electromagnet radiations into an etched optical fiber and elongating or compressing this optical fiber in a longitudinal direction.

CONSTITUTION: For example, a submersible acoustic sensor is immersed into a soln. contg. acoustic signals. The periodic changes of the pressure appearing in the acoustic signals expand or contract a soft thin film 7-9. The etched single mode optical fiber 8-9 is elongated or contracted in compliance with the expansion or contraction of this thin film 7-9. The electromagnetic radiations propagating the inside of the core of the fiber 8-9 are, therefore, modulated. The single mode fiber is elongated or contracted in the longitudinal direction by using the one signal energy in such a manner, by which the changes are induced in the optical distance of the optical fiber. As a result, the phase modulation of the larger quantity of the light propagating in the core is obtd.
