PURPOSE: To form a thin transparent film which undergoes little discoloration when thermally cured, does not suffer acceleration in discoloration even it has a high-temperature history, and is useful for forming a protective film or smooth layer for a colored resin film, by using a phenolic novolak and/or a cresol novolak having a low coloring effect as curing agent.
CONSTITUTION: A thin transparent film is obtained by dissolving a phenolic novolak glycidyl ether and/or a cresol novolak glycidyl ether and, as curing agent, a phenolic novolak and/or a cresol novolak in an organic solvent, forming a film from this solution, and thermally curing this film. Said novolak curing agent is such that a 40wt.% solution thereof in ethyl Cellosolve acetate has a spectral transmittance through an optical path of 10mm of at least 60%, 90% and 94% respectively at 500nm, 550nm and 600W700nm using ethyl Cellosolve acetate as reference. A thin film obtained by this technique undergoes little discoloration even when thermally cured and scarcely suffers acceleration in discoloration even it has a high-temperature history; therefore, it can give an excellent protective film or smooth layer which does not impair the spectral characteristics of a colored resin film.
